ToysBulletin.com reviews a pair of new action toys from Whombatz.
You know every once in a while you come across someone who grew up just like you did, and then you instantly feel like there’s a connection? Well, that’s how I felt when I met the folks from Whombatz (three brothers) at this year’s Toy Fair in New York. The kicker here is that these guys created a product that I knew I would like the minute I saw it. It was a set of ultimate foam fighting weapons that I would have died to have had as a kid.
So you can imagine our excitement when we got our hands on them to test. We tried both the Thorn (17″ long), which is like a small baseball bat shaped foam weapon, and the Rift (20″ long), which is similar to the Thorn but has a foam axe head on the top of it. We used both the Thorn and Rift, along with a host of other weapons rounded up by the neighborhood kids, to provide a night of serious battling among six eager youngsters.
The Thorn and the Rift both proved to be effective fighting tools. The Rift might have the edge though, because the axe head provides for additional impact and shock value, even though both are of similar shapes. There’s just something about being chased by someone with an axe. Your adrenaline seems to go up immediately. The kids also had some standard Nerf guns, which were ok for short distance shooting, but most of the close combat involved the Whombatz weapons.
Both the Thorn and the Rift were incredibly strong, yet most forgiving when you strike. They feature a nice balance between letting someone know they clearly got smacked, and not inflicting any real pain. To this extent, their design is rather ingenious. You can bend them but no matter how hard you pull you can’t break them. There are few toys out there that feel this durable and I think the team at Whombatz has really created a perfect set of kids’ weapons.
It’s going to be a blast to see where they take this line. The Thorn retails for $13.99, and the Rift for $17.99 so the prices are reasonable and perfect for birthday gifts. The complete line also includes nunchucks, a shield and a double-sided sword (Whombatz Torrent) reminiscent of Darth Maul’s lightsaber (for $34.99). But, be sure to also check out the Whombatz Avenger, the newly introduced 36″ two-handed sword ($29.99). Go to the Whombatz website to make purchases and learn more.
