Hot Game Review: Toasted or Roasted

Toasted or Roasted 1 ToysBulletin.com looks at a new game release from Education Outdoors, Inc.

“Toasted or Roasted” is a great summer family vacation game geared for 2-4 players ages 6 years old and up. First of all, the game is packaged in a most unique way, with all components arriving in a plastic bag with its own double zip-lock closure. The folks at Education Outdoors, Inc. indicated that the game is a perfect companion to have along on family camping trips and this type of packaging protects the game from rain. That made sense to us.

The game contents include 54 cards, 8 discs, a picnic table board and a short set of rules. The object of the game is to be the first player to successfully roast 3 marshmallows over a campfire. To begin play, each player receives two double sided discs, one of which has “firewood” on one side and a “campfire” on the other, while the other has a “toasting stick” on one side and a “toasting fork” on the reverse side. At the start of the game, each player must have the discs turned face up to the “firewood” and “toasting stick” sides. Next, 4 cards are dealt to each player, with the remaining cards forming a draw pile on the picnic table board.

There are six different types of cards in the deck, including 10 fire starter cards, 16 marshmallow cards, 16 toasted cards, 8 roasted cards, 2 rain cards and 2 strong wind cards. Players alternate turns by first drawing a card from the draw pile. The first task facing each player is to collect one fire starter card, which enables a player to turn over their “firewood” disc to the “campfire” side. After getting the fire started, the player looks for a marshmallow card, which can be played on the “toasting stick,” and lastly the player must play a toasted card to cook that marshmallow to perfection. If a player cannot play a card during their turn, they must discard one card to the discard pile on the picnic table. Only one card can be played per turn. If a player ever decides to discard a fire starter card, they have the option to place it on the special tool box space on the picnic table. These cards can then be drawn, if needed, to start a campfire, but that Toasted or Roasted 2player must wait an extra turn before he can get his fire burning once again.

To liven things up just a bit, the competing players can cause havoc by playing a roasted card on top of an opponent’s marshmallow before it is toasted, and burn it to a crisp, taking both cards to the discard pile. Also, there is a rain card and a strong wind card, which can be played on an opponents campfire, forcing the disc to be turned to the “firewood” side. No marshmallows can be roasted if there is not a campfire, causing that player to look for another fire starter card. In addition, once a player successfully toasts his first marshmallow, he can turn over the disc to the “toasting fork” side and try to toast two marshmallows at the same time. Remember, it only takes 3 toasted marshmallows to win the game.

This is an extremely easy game to play and a typical game lasts less than 30 minutes. It was fun with just 2 players, but we rated it even better with 3 or 4 players. “Toasted or Roasted” retails for just $14.95 and can be purchased at Amazon.com.
